Is Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket?
Taking to Instagram, Rohit stated, "Hello everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," Rohit, who had retired from T20 after India won the T20 World Cup last year with him as captain, said in a post on social media on Wednesday evening.
The 38-year-old was India's most prolific Test batter in the second half of his career, scoring 4301 runs in 67 Tests with 12 hundreds and 18 half centuries at an average of 40.57. Rohit captained India to the World Test Championship final against Australia. He saved the last few indifferent series against New Zealand at home and the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia.
About Rohit Sharma's career in test matches:
Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 against West Indies at Eden Gardens, scoring a century in his first innings. Initially a middle-order batter, he struggled for consistency but found success in 2019 after transitioning to an opener.
Rohit’s final match was the fourth Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series, which India lost. Rohit was dropped for the fifth match of the series as India conceded the series 1-3.

Biography of Rohit Sharma:-
Rohit Gurunath Sharma (born 30 April 1987) is an Indian international cricketer and the captain of the Indian cricket Team in the ODI format. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest ODI opening batters of all time. He is a right-handed batsman who plays for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and for Mumbai in domestic cricket. Rohit previously captained India in all three formats. After leading India to the victory at the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup, he announced his retirement from T20IS. He also led India to victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He announced his retirement from Test Cricket on 7th May 2025.
U-TURN BEFORE ENGLAND TOUR?
India Today had reported earlier this year that Rohit had contemplated retiring from Tests before the England tour. However, after the Champions Trophy triumph in February, Rohit held discussions with the BCCI top brass, expressing his desire to be given the opportunity to play the England tour. The BCCI was open to supporting his decision after India’s triumph.
But, Rohit's decision put the selectors in a tough spot. The senior selection committee was not entirely sure of having Rohit, 38, to lead the Test team at the start of a new World Test Championship cycle. Rohit played a Ranji Trophy match after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but he failed with the bat for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir.
There was a legitimate concern about allowing a senior player to continue if his performances in the format are not up to standard. A dip in form could affect India’s performance at the start of the new cycle and damage the selectors’ reputation.
